All Quiet On The Western Front, The Wars, and A Farewell To Arms Any and all events in one's life may change a person profoundly, but the effect may not always be as expected. For instance, situations of despair may cause feelings of depression and uncertainty to develop in an individual, as would likely be expected. However, those same situations could ultimately lead to a sense of fulfilment or enlightenment. In the novels All Quiet On The Western Front by Erich Remarque, The Wars by Timothy Findley, and A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemmingway, the varying possibilities of the effects of war on an individual are clearly displayed. In All Quiet On The Western Front, Paul Baumer finds the war has changed not only the way he views himself in the present, but also the way he views his past and his future. In The Wars, Robert Ross finds himself on a path of uncertainty, questioning the apparent loss of humanity in the world around him. Yet he ultimately uses the war as a medium through which the true essence of his character is able to shine. Finally , in the American classic A Farewell To Arms, Lieutenant Henry recognises that he is losing himself in the war and attempts to find an escape through love. As a result of the horrors and tragedies surrounding them, the characters in these three novels question their sense of self in light of their experiences in the war. Jonathan Swift’s poem, The Lady’s Dressing Room, is a comic satire that seeks to show readers the inescapable humanity – and its flaws and gory ugliness – that women have to live with no matter how hard they try to make themselves appear immaculately beautiful on the outside. It could be read as a criticism of the extreme efforts women do to make themselves beautiful, and as a criticism of the beholder, the man, who is enamored by the physical beauty only to realize the imperfections being hidden underneath that flawless exterior in the lady’s dressing room. The dressing room is where the transformation takes place – this is where the lady goes in simple and when she comes out she is a radiant beauty and men cannot help themselves. That is what the poem implies that is why the poem begins with a man, Strephon, who is enamored by Celia who takes at least five hours to prepare herself, sneaking in the dressing room to find out why, and discovers the horrors that goes on not only inside the room but also with his beloved Celia’s body beneath those laces and brocades. He discovers: first a dirty Smock appear'd, Beneath the Arm-pits well besmear'd. Strephon, the Rogue, display'd it wide, And turn'd it round on every Side. On such a Point few Words are best, And Strephon bids us guess the rest; But swears how damnably the Men lie, In calling Celia sweet and cleanly. That in fact, Celia is not as perfect as she seems – her clothes have perspiration and bad smell on them. hat follows next is a series of finding other items Celia uses to prepare herself – combs with dirt, dandruff and sweat, a piece of cloth with oil used to cover wrinkles, gloves made from Celia’s dog’s skin when it died, and various little jars filled with pomade, paint, ointments, all these used to cover her imperfections. Strephon even finds the discarded stockings that reveal stinking toes. No wonder that at the end of the poem, Strephon could no longer look straight at any woman, for his imagination always conjures the images he saw in the dressing roo m and saw their stinks, their flaws that they try so hard to hide. The narrator of the poem says that this is vengeance for his peeping, for if Strephon did no such thing then he could still be blessed when he sees beautiful women without knowing â€Å"such gaudy Tulips rais’d from Dung†. Hence this is the curse of the lady’s dressing room, that it took the magic and wonder for the beholder and made him see the woman as the imperfect creature masquerading to be a work of art. However, the dressing room is also a curse for Celia and all women, as it is the chamber where they feed their obsession to make themselves beautiful for men. In the poem the narrator mentioned â€Å"Celia’s magnifying Glass†, which is simply a mirror, but in this mirror everything was enlarged, that it can †¦to Sight disclose, The smallest Worm in Celia's Nose, And faithfully direct her Nail To squeeze it out from Head to Tail; For catch it nicely by the Head, It must come out alive or dead. — that it makes her so insecure to make her spend time to look for even the minutest flaws that no one would see anyway. The woman spends a minimum of five hours (perhaps an exaggerated figure, but the point is that women spend a large amount of time preening) and fails to see that real beauty comes from within, not on what is reflected by a piece of glass. The poem shows the readers an image of the preparation taken to make one look good outside but in so doing shows that perhaps it is nature’s way that makes it so difficult – that we should learn to appreciate each other and ourselves, flaws included, for we all have them. This is not to say to forgo hygiene, but merely to examine what activities we spend time on. The curse of the dressing room is that it makes us believe in the illusion that media sells us: the dream of that perfect skin, that Barbie body, that photoshopped face, that if we make up ourselves as long as we need to we can transcend our human bodies’ flaws. But we cannot, because all these are parts of what makes us who we are.

In 2014, approximately 13 million people are injecting drugs worldwide, which is an alarming 0.3% of the entire adult population (UNAIDS, 2014). Injecting drugs often results in increased negative health consequences and may lead to the transmission of blood-borne viruses such as HIV. As of now, about 1.7 million, or 13% of the injected drug users are living with HIV (UNAIDS, 2014). Though featured in nearly every country, injected drug use is still treated as a crime and lead easily to incarceration (UNAIDS, 2014). This essay seeks to examine how incarceration fails as a method of illicit drug control and puts an already at-risk group in further peril. About 56% to 90% of injected drug users will be incarcerated at some point in their lives worldwide. Imprisonment, however, will not necessarily eliminate an individual’s access to illicit drugs. If anything, illicit drugs may be cheaper inside of the jails than outside (Pisani, 2008). Some prisoners even inject drugs for the f irst time in jails, thus potentially initiating dependence under the most unfavorable circumstances. Learning in English Essay The activity consists of the pupils watching the report and then producing a written account, using their imagination to devise their own interpretation. One of the reasons behind the use of the French report is to include the EAL pupil in a positive way. To achieve this I will ask her to give an account to the whole class of the true facts and information found on the video. Thus displaying the importance of communication and therefore encouraging her to embrace her own individuality. In turn I hope this will help the rest of the class to recognise and respect the difficulties that EAL pupils can face in everyday learning. Displaying the video on the interactive whiteboard in this way will assist me with incorporating information communication technology (ICT) into my literacy teaching. ICT can help teachers, when used effectively to improve their teaching. In this case, I will use ICT effectively with a large display on the board to show the class a visual, interactive video. They will also have the opportunity to use ICT during lesson five when performing their own news reports to the class. The pupils will be able to use overhead projectors, audio sound effects and power point presentations to assist them with their work. Teachers must always consider how they can produce lessons that are effective as possible. When planning my unit of work I considered the lessons with and without the use of ICT and found that I could in fact make these activities more effective with the inclusion of these resources. (Sadler, 1994) I understand the importance of differentiating work to suit the needs of all children within my class. Not only must I develop strategies to progress the EAL pupil, but I must also help children of different abilities. I will differentiate the activities by providing support sheets for children of a lower ability. As with the EAL pupil, prompt sheets and planning guidance, such as checklists will be given to pupils of a lower ability to assist them with their written work. The use of group work also gives the pupils of a higher ability the opportunity to guide and help pupils who may be struggling. My class teacher reassured me that pupils of a lower ability need encouragement and praise to help increase their confidence, therefore I have planned to give children the opportunity to share their achievements with the class during the plenary of each lesson. During this time I will highlight the strengths of the pupils individual work, giving them confidence in their ability, thus encouraging them to reproduce this effort in future lessons. My unit of work provides great opportunity for assessment. This is mandatory for all teachers, as they must have a sound knowledge of the levels their pupils are achieving ensuring that they are delivering lessons that challenge and progress their pupils. It is important that pupils are working at an appropriate level whereby they do not find their work too easy, as this could cause a plateau in their learning, just as importantly the work must not be too difficult as they can feel threatened by the challenge. To achieve this, teachers must assess their pupils, to understand the level they are working at, to show what they aim to achieve. I plan to use continuous assessment, both formal and informal. Observation and questioning will assist me in gaining an understanding of the pupils ideas and developments, and marking their written work will help with individually levelling the pupils. The purpose of the assessment process is to make explicit childrens achievements, celebrate their achievements with them, then help them to move forward to the next goal (Sainsbury, 1996. P. 9) With this in mind, I plan to incorporated peer, self and teacher assessment into my unit of work, helping the children to track their own achievements, and take pride in their personal growth.
